What Is Asian Handicap? A Beginner's Guide
Asian handicap removes the draw by giving one side a goal start. It sounds complex, but there are only four line types and each settles one way.
An Asian handicap gives one team a goal advantage or deficit before kick-off, turning a lopsided fixture into something near even money. In exchange the draw disappears — which is exactly why it is the default board across Asia.

- 0.5, 1.5, 2.5 — always win or lose

- 0, 1, 2 — can refund

- The 0 line — whoever wins, that side wins
The core idea
The stronger side gives goals, the weaker side receives them. Your bet settles on the real score plus or minus the handicap. If your team receives 1 goal and the match ends 1-1, the settled score is 2-1 and your bet wins.
Half-goal lines
Half goals do not exist, so these lines cannot draw. This is the cleanest type. Backing a team at -0.5 means you need them to win, simply. Taking +0.5 means a draw or a win both pay. A -1.5 line requires a two-goal margin.
Whole lines and refunds
Lines of 0, 1 and 2 add a third possibility: a refund. If the settled score is level, your stake comes back.
On a -1 line, a 1-0 win settles as 0-0 and both sides are refunded. This is where beginners misread the result — they assume they won because their team won.
Quarter lines
Lines of 0.25 and 0.75 split your stake between the two nearest lines. A -0.25 line is half at 0 and half at -0.5, so results include half-win and half-loss.
- +0.25 and the match is drawn: half refunded, half won → half win.
- -0.25 and the match is drawn: half refunded, half lost → half loss.
- -0.75 and you win by one: half won at -0.5, half refunded at -1 → half win.
Worked examples in VND
1,000,000 ₫ on a team at -0.5, odds 1.90. They win 2-1 → settled 1.5-1, bet wins, return 1,900,000 ₫.
Same stake at -0.25, odds 1.95, match drawn 1-1 → 500,000 ₫ refunded, 500,000 ₫ lost. You lose 500,000 ₫ instead of the full amount.
Same stake at +0.75, odds 2.00, the team loses 0-1 → half lost at +0.5, half refunded at +1. You lose 500,000 ₫.
When to use it
Asian handicap is most useful when you are confident a side will not lose but not that they will win — a +0.25 or +0.5 line expresses that precisely, and 1X2 cannot. It is also the main tool in competitions with wide quality gaps, where a straight win market is close to meaningless.
