How to Read Football Odds A–Z
Football odds do two jobs at once: they tell you what a bet pays, and what the bookmaker thinks the chances are. Read the second one and the whole board looks different.
Every price on a betting site is the same information in three costumes. Learn the conversions once and the format stops mattering — including the part that decides whether a bet is worth taking.
Decimal odds
The default in Vietnam and across Europe. The number is your total return per unit staked, stake included.
Return = stake × odds. A 500,000 ₫ bet at 3.20 returns 1,600,000 ₫, of which 1,100,000 ₫ is profit. Anything below 2.00 is an odds-on favourite.
- 1.50
- 750,000 ₫ (profit 250,000 ₫)
- 2.00
- 1,000,000 ₫ (profit 500,000 ₫)
- 3.40
- 1,700,000 ₫ (profit 1,200,000 ₫)
- 7.00
- 3,500,000 ₫ (profit 3,000,000 ₫)
Other formats
Fractional is the British style: 5/1 means five units of profit per unit staked. Divide and add one — 5/1 → 6.00 decimal, 1/2 → 1.50.
American uses a sign. +250 means a 100 stake profits 250, so 3.50 decimal. -150 means staking 150 to profit 100, so 1.667.
Hong Kong odds, common on Asian boards, show net profit per unit: 0.85 equals 1.85 decimal.
Odds as probability
Implied probability = 100 ÷ decimal odds.
- 1.50 → 66.7%
- 2.00 → 50%
- 3.40 → 29.4%
- 10.00 → 10%
A price is the bookmaker's estimate adjusted upward for profit. A bet is worth taking only when you think the real chance is higher than the implied one — that is the whole concept of value, and why backing favourites is not a strategy.
Finding the margin
Convert every outcome to implied probability and add them up. A fair market totals 100%. It never does.
A match priced 2.10 / 3.40 / 3.80 gives 47.6% + 29.4% + 26.3% = 103.3%. The 3.3% above 100 is the margin.
Lower margin means better value, and margin compounds across the legs of an accumulator — which is why a five-fold is far worse value than five singles.
The main markets
- 1X2. Home, draw or away over 90 minutes plus stoppage.
- Asian handicap. A goal head start that removes the draw; see the Asian handicap guide.
- Over/Under. Total goals above or below a line, usually 2.5.
- Both teams to score. Yes or no, ignoring the result.
- Accumulators. Several selections multiplied, with the margin compounding.
Why odds move
Prices shift for two reasons: new information — lineups, injuries, weather — and money, when heavy backing forces the book to shorten one side. You cannot tell which from the move alone, so "the odds are dropping, get on" is not a signal. It usually means you are getting a worse price than the people who bet earlier.

What do decimal odds mean?
The decimal is your total return per unit staked, stake included. 500,000 ₫ at 3.20 returns 1,600,000 ₫.
How do I convert odds to probability?
Divide 100 by the decimal odds. A price of 2.50 implies a 40% chance.
What does 5/1 mean?
Five units of profit per unit staked, which is 6.00 in decimal.
What is the bookmaker's margin?
Add the implied probabilities of every outcome; anything above 100% is the margin.
Do shorter odds mean a safer bet?
No. Shorter odds mean a higher implied probability, not safety. Favourites lose regularly.
